Energy efficiency may be a buzzword these days, but for hospitals across the country it is a mission. And little wonder: Hospitals, which account for four percent of all energy consumed in the U.S., can achieve vast energy savings — while maintaining and often improving their quality of care — simply by choosing systems designed with sustainability in mind. Indeed, a new study presented at the CleanMed conference in Baltimore this May revealed that hospitals could achieve up to a 60 percent reduction in utility use by redesigning the way they use energy. And, that, the study found, translates into some $730,000 in annual savings for the average-size hospital.
Energy efficiency can be achieved in a host of ways, too — everything from the design of windows and lighting systems to the air filters hospitals use to reduce harmful airborne particles, keeping air quality high and lowering the chances of dangerous infections.
The benefits aren’t just about cost, either. The environment, too, wins from energy efficient designs. On average, a hospital emits approximately 18,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Cutting energy use by 60 percent means that 7,800 tons less escape to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. That’s the equivalent of taking 1,300 automobiles off the road.
But as significant as these savings are, both to the pocketbook and the planet, they can’t come at the expense of performance. That’s particularly true for hospitals, where patient care — and well-being — must always be the top priority.
