Washington, D.C. (news)–Hospital acquired infections kill some 48,000 patients every year according to new research reported by Reuters. Pneumonia was listed as one of the top fatal infections patients contracted due to poor infection control in U.S. hospitals. The study also revealed hospital-acquired infections (HAI) caused an additional 2.3 million extra days of inpatient admission stays at a cost of $8.1 billion in 2006.

The sponsor of the study claimed in many of the HAI cases, the conditions and deaths could have been avoided with better hospital infection control. Patients who caught pneumonia, which is a lung disease and can be transmitted by airborne particles, were forced to stay an additional two weeks in the hospital to treat their near fatal infection. More than 11 percent of the HAI pneumonia patients died.

Maintaining proper air quality control with the use of HVAC air filtration systems is one measure to reduce airborne contaminants that can lead to hospital acquired infections resulting in deaths. Reducing hospital-acquired infections improves patient outcomes and saves patient lives. Even though pneumonia is the most costly of all HAIs, it is also the most preventable. With the proper levels of air filtration coupled with the appropriate number of air changes, infections can be prevented. Hospital-acquired infections are a risk that can be highly manageable with the right tools. Camfil has made these tools available and highly economical.
