Washington, D.C. (news)–Hospital acquired infections kill some 48,000 patients every year according to new research reported by Reuters. Pneumonia was listed as one of the top fatal infections patients contracted due to poor infection control in U.S. hospitals. The study also revealed hospital-acquired infections (HAI) caused an additional 2.3 million extra days of inpatient admission stays at a cost of $8.1 billion in 2006.
The sponsor of the study claimed in many of the HAI cases, the conditions and deaths could have been avoided with better hospital infection control. Patients who caught pneumonia, which is a lung disease and can be transmitted by airborne particles, were forced to stay an additional two weeks in the hospital to treat their near fatal infection. More than 11 percent of the HAI pneumonia patients died.
